The Rotterdam Ahoy, our chosen venue, is fully aligned with the World Energy Council‘s innovative approach towards global energy transitions, showcasing a shared commitment to forward-thinking energy initiatives.
The design of Rotterdam Ahoy prioritises minimal energy consumption. Specifically, it operates entirely without gas and features a 1,713 m2 moss sedum roof, effectively reducing CO2 emissions. This remarkable feature has already offset 1 ton of CO2, demonstrating its significant environmental impact. Additionally, its rooftop solar panels supply a quarter of the venue’s annual energy needs.
For more information on the sustainable solutions throughout the Ahoy check out the Rotterdam Ahoy Sustainability Floorplan. Also, take a look at the Sustainability Brochure.
While we acknowledge that travelling by plane is unavoidable for international attendees, we highly encourage all delegates to consider all available sustainable options to travel to the Congress.
One of the popular ways to get to Rotterdam is by train. When travelling from France, Belgium or the UK, you have the possibility to arrive by Eurostar (which runs ten times per day). Although trains are not 100% pollutant free, they’re certainly on the right track! Download, rather than print, your tickets to reduce the impact of your journey even further.
For more information on this, please visit our travel & accommodation page.
We encourage all delegates attending the Congress to use sustainable travel options whilst getting to and around Rotterdam.
Good to know! The Metropolitan Region Rotterdam Den Haag (MRDH) was proclaimed the region with the most sustainable mobility in 2021.
Rotterdam Central Station and The Hague Central Station are both well connected to Rotterdam the Hague Airport via public transport. The costs are low and regular intercity trains will bring you to the heart of the city.
The Rotterdam Ahoy, is conveniently accessible by metro, tram and bus, so please consider this option when travelling to the venue. From the bus and metro station Zuidplein, it takes only a 5-minute walk!
More informationThe Netherlands is also world-famous for its great biking culture. For short travels within Rotterdam, we highly encourage delegates to take advantage of the many biking lanes and the ‘OV-fiets’ rental bikes available at the Rotterdam Central station. Should you use your own bike, there is bike storage at the front of Ahoy.
More informationLunch at the 26th World Energy Congress will feature fresh, locally sourced seasonal dishes to limit our ‘food miles’ to a bare minimum. We will thoughtfully prepare meals that cater to different dietary preferences, with clear signs indicating each option. Our aim is to offer delicious and inclusive choices for everyone attending.
The Ahoy disposables (plates, cups and cutlery) are made from 100% recycled materials and FSC-certified wood, which helps to reduce our environmental footprint. Furthermore, any leftover coffee grounds from the coffee machines are collected and used for the cultivation of oyster mushrooms, through the award-winning circular concept ‘RotterZwam’. Last but not least, the Rotterdam Ahoy also uses Orbisk to help with waste reduction in the catering department. For more details about this, check www.orbisk.com.

Vattenfall is the official Energy Provider of the World Energy Congress. Visitors to the event can, among other things, use a large charging plaza, with 30 mobile charging points and two batteries installed by Vattenfall especially for the event. The charging plaza can be found in the car park next to the conference centre. This allows visitors to participate in the programme while the electric car is charged for the return journey.
